What am I

I have
Kicked rabbits
Cursed sheep
Kept a dog
Appeased a tiger
Hidden from wolves
If all these animals are seen as men
Then I am the only animal

Icicles Melting Beneath the Eaves

The importance of temperature to life
Is more than mere heat expansion and cold retraction
Temperature bears and extinguishes color
Creates song and silence
Even obscures or enlivens writing itself

Whether you are swimming
Or wrapping yourself in cotton clothing
Releasing out or gathering it all in from branches
Nature places four seasons in succession
Even a single temperature
Has its spring and fall
Even the icicles under the eaves
Have a nation of origin

Chinese like no other appreciate the saliva
Excreted under years of pressured silence:
The feeling of saying a few truthful words
When the temperature is finally just right

(Translated by Paul Manfredi)

The starting price for this condo is 600,000
With southern exposure to sunlight
Which has been put on the market by global citizens

The interior is appealing
The surfaces are smooth
To pay rent is monthly bleeding
Mortgages are the popular thing

Such wonders are here to serve us
All the world wholeheartedly agrees
Since society's connections are packaged for sale
There is no escape for connection-seeking poets

And yet
Since age sixteen I was packaged by poetry
I acquiesced to becoming its commodity
How strategic and far-thinking, this poetry business is!
Before society's makings could come together, it pounced on me
Within the package of poetry I met my underground buddies
Mang Ke and Bei Dao and DuoDuo

The system of the establishment

Shut your mouth!
Listen to what your ears have to tell you
The whir of a powerful machine is transmitted
Through rust-spotted industrial ears
The smallest component has human weight
With bones and thought included
The machine is powered by lovely submission

From craftsmanship to industry
Civilization has been assembled
Pay no mind to the components
The drop forgers are forging everything
A shifted piece feels the looseness of a verb

Submission gets a taste of none-too-peaceful welding
Pipelines of petroleum are routed through the heart
From the tight valves of existence
Not a drop of existence can leak

LAWS OF NATURE

Among the colors of black, green, white and blue
Amid rondo, concerto, or marching tune
Each character type returns to its own native land

This is the foundation for fortune tellers to exist

Such a foundation is not shaken by mass death
From technology gone amok or earthly disasters
Such rootedness isn't changed by war or politics
Death is the native land of all native lands

The fortune teller's torrent of words has
something behind it
Like the laws of water in the old well
In the fortune teller's hometown

THANKS FOR THAT

The state has occupied all geographical surfaces
I can only construct my inner world downward
The government has occupied the biggest banquet table
The plate in my hands has to serve as my table
Social institutions occupy all the skeletal joints
So I pound out a romantic mood with percussion of flesh
Schools have occupied the vantage point of education
All my theories can do is fight guerilla actions
My wife has occupied the facial expression of family life
All I can do is polish the mirror a little brighter
My children have occupied the future
All I can do is help them tie their shoes
For this kind of arrangement
All I can say is thank you

FIRECRACKERS CRY OUT TO GET RICH

Hundreds and thousands of firecrackers, crying out to get rich
Until their voices get raspy just like people
What else can they do?
Such is the concreteness of life
It needs liveliness
It needs a competitive edge
It needs explosive force

Once lit up by desire
There is no more staying quiet
Once lit up by desire
You split your seams with all the fiery ch'i in your body

Firecrackers of different prices are different in nature
Roman candles and bottle rockets
Staccato strings and cherry bombs
Once lit up by desire
You squeeze out whatever you have in you
And cover the ground with litter of prosperity
